A Different Perspective
Photography by Patrick Downes

The most fulfilling travel experiences are, and always have been, a matter of perspective. A tourist views a destination from a distance, a hands-off-outsider. A traveler becomes part of the experience, adds his or her perspective to it. The same is true of the photography that invariably records a trip. We’ve all had to endure the endless slide shows of smiling friends and/or relatives standing in front of the Statue of Liberty, on the lip of the Grand Canyon, atop the Eiffel Tower, lounging in a Venetian gondola, arms around Mickey at Disney Land/World. Then there are the "photographers,’ among them, whose work seems like assignments for a photography class or near perfect copies of magazine shots. And then there is the truly unique perspective. In that regard, we offer the photos of Patrick Downes. Some of the subjects are of familiar places: New York City, the Arizona desert, San Francisco’s Union Square, Miami’s South Beach. Others less so: Guatemala, South Dakota’s annual buffalo roundup. All from that uniquely individualized perspective that makes the best travel a uniquely personalized experience.

For the second time in four years, naturaltraveler.com has won the Canadian Tourism Commission’s Northern Lights Award for Internet Reporting, this time for my article entitled: "Newfoundland, Where Landscape Defines Literature." It is another in a series of journalism awards writers for the site have won over the past few years. I am particularly proud of this award because the article calls attention to the kind of innovative, in-depth coverage, by my fellow journalists, that defines naturaltraveler.com. It also represents the level of planning and cooperation that goes into articles for the website. Beginning with the premise that many people choose a destination on the basis of a beautifully wrought piece of fiction, I found a wonderful example in Newfoundland and worked closely with Gillian Marx of Newfoundland & Labrador Media Relations, who was indispensible in setting up the interviews with the world-class authors who are quoted in the article. I feel I share this award with Gillian and her colleagues.
